Abstract
This paper presents an electronic device conceived to assist the mobility of blind and visually impaired people in urban environments. Our proposal exploits the ubiquitous computing capabilities of GPS smartphones to position and guide users along public spaces. The instructions for space navigation are coded as vibrating patterns, which are tactually felt underfoot via an interface placed inside the shoe. To assess the performance of our device, two experiments were conducted. The first involved a group of 20 normally sighted participants, which were requested to report on the information provided by the tactile display. Success rates over 93% were obtained. For the second, a blind participant was requested to evaluate the device. Results suggest that the proposal can effectively increase the autonomy of users, which also find in the device a useful and easy to use tool.
Keywords: Assistive technology, mobility tool, GPS-based navigation, tactile display, wearable device.
